Overview
This rewarding hike begins at Rugged Glen Nature Reserve, a tranquil section of the Royal Natal National Park renowned for its rolling grasslands, clear mountain streams, and abundant birdlife. From the trailhead, the route steadily ascends through montane grassland and patches of indigenous forest, following well-marked paths that climb towards the foothills of the Amphitheatre, one of the Drakensberg’s most celebrated landmarks.
As hikers gain altitude, panoramic views unfold across the Thukela Valley, the Mahai River gorge, and the towering escarpment walls of the Amphitheatre, Devil’s Tooth, and Eastern Buttress. On clear days, the horizon stretches deep into the Free State plains, contrasting dramatically with the sculpted basalt cliffs of the uKhahlamba.
Cannibal Cavern – Heritage and Significance
The destination, Cannibal Cavern (or Cannibal Cave), is a vast sandstone overhang rich in both geological and cultural heritage. Archaeological evidence suggests that the shelter was once used by San hunter-gatherers, who left traces of rock art depicting their spiritual and daily lives. In later centuries, the cavern gained its name from tragic episodes during the early 19th century, when groups of displaced people—fleeing the upheavals of the Mfecane/Difaqane—sought refuge in these cliffs. Oral traditions recount that starvation during these turbulent times led to acts of cannibalism, giving the site its evocative name.
Today, Cannibal Cavern stands as a poignant reminder of both the endurance and suffering of those who once sought sanctuary here. Its vast, echoing chamber offers cool respite and a commanding view across the valley below, making it an excellent place to rest and have lunch before returning via the same trail.
