Rugged Glen to Cannibal Cavern

On November 1, 2025, James Seymour and three potential members of our section—Mads, Camilla, and Eloise—hiked from Rugged Glen to Cannibal Cavern. This moderate hike covered approximately 15 kilometres with an elevation gain of 660 meters, and it took just over five hours to complete.

This hike has some of the most magnificent views of the Amphitheatre. Cannibal Cavern or Caves is enormous. It has a rich heritage associated with the Drakensberg San and cannibals who tried to escape the ravages of the ‘Mfecane’. Unfortunately, the San Rock Art at this site is badly faded and only visible under certain lighting conditions.

The trail in parts is badly overgrown and poorly maintained. It is also sad to see that the Rugged Glen campsite, which is a magnificent location, has been closed.

Special thanks to the Cavern Resort for allowing us to hike the last section of the trail and enter the cavern, which is their private property.
